As with plenty of other businesses, Safeway, one of Canada and America's favorite supermarkets, began life in the unlikeliest of places. In small town Idaho, to be exact, where Skaggs' (as they were known then) low prices made them instantly popular with American Falls locals. By 1926, there were over 400 Skaggs stores, and later that year, 750. Safeway pioneered bulk pricing, sell-by dates and parking lots by the 1930s, making the chain the first truly modernized supermarket.
There are now over 1600 Safeway supermarkets, stocking the freshest produce and scrumptious own-brand products; their Safeway Select gourmet items and Refreshe sodas are especially popular. Often times, their sales are reserved only for Safeway Club card holders, but signing up for one is completely free. You may also treat a friend to quality groceries by giving a Safeway gift card, which is redeemable at all Safeway locations in America, in addition to Safeway-owned supermarkets such as Vons and Tom Thumb.
