In the decade of the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, art-films were, just as they are today, relegated to the fringes and screened by only a handful of cinemas around the world. A plucky group of expatriates decided in 1958 that enough was enough, and proceeded to establish the Singapore Film Society.
